A few days after childbirth women may some time experience pain when breastfeeding the baby. Women are experiencing what we call engorgement. Engorgement is also an inflammation of the breast, which means the woman often feels a lump in one part of the breast, and the skin in the area is red and warm. Why does this happen? And what is the cause of it? This condition happens when the breast produces too much milk, the breast of a nursing mother becomes heavy and sore.

How to overcome it?

1. A mother can remove the excess milk by hand massage or by a breast pump. Frequent nursing can empty or lower the presence of milk in the breast. After nursing and the baby does not empty your breast during feedings you can used a breast pump so that your milk will be empty and it would be full if your baby is on his next feeding.

2. Mother should eat and drink enough. Sleep and napping is also advisable.

3. A nursing mother should wear a supportive maternity bra. Bras support the breast and make women feel comfortable. To other women instead of feeling pain in her breast, they complain of abdominal pain which is due to the contractions of the uterus. These pains come on when the baby starts to suckle. Suckling can thus help to reduce uterus back to its normal size, known as involution.

4. Consult the doctor, he may suggest heat compress to avoid much pain in the breast. Taking medicines to ease the pain is also helpful. Antibiotics are prescribed to relieve the pain, but after two weeks of intake and no results, the doctor should suggest medical check up and surgery.

Despite the pain felt by the mothers, they still continue breastfeeding because they know the benefits of breast milk and of course they want their baby to be healthy.

Milk from mother is the better food for the newborn. Breast milk contains the specific nutrients in just the right amounts required for the growing baby from immediately after the birth, until the baby is old enough to off the table. The nutrient content of milk is not constant, but continually changes to meet the growth needs of the infant, as the infants growth rate declines, the concentration of protein in mother's milk decreases.

If the problem persists, the woman develops a breast abscess or a type of breast cancer called inflammatory breast cancer. It is the condition of of breast infection that cannot be detect in mammography during the examinations of your physician.
